How to Use Moxa Sticks at Home: A Simple First Session

New to moxibustion? Here's a simple, safe way to try smokeless moxa sticks at home for the first time.

If you’re new to moxibustion, the learning curve is smaller than it looks. A smokeless stick is lit at one end like an incense stick, then held a few centimeters above the skin, close enough to feel warmth, never close enough to feel heat that’s uncomfortable. Most sessions run five to fifteen minutes per area.

A few things are worth keeping in mind before your first session.

Work in a space with light ventilation, even with a smokeless stick, since there’s still a small amount of natural smoke.

Keep a heatproof dish nearby to rest the stick between uses, and extinguish it fully in sand or ash rather than water.

Start with shorter sessions until you know how your skin responds to sustained warmth.

Avoid use directly over broken skin, areas with reduced sensation, or during pregnancy without first checking with a healthcare provider.

There’s no need to get it perfect on the first try. The point isn’t precision, it’s giving yourself a few quiet minutes with steady warmth and no screen in front of you.
